The Best Rum Cake
I don't suggest that anybody buy anything that I am not sold on myself. Ok so everybody says that Tortuga makes the best Rum Cake. I thought so too till our last visit to Grand Cayman and Blackbeards Rum and Cake Company. You can't miss the place if you just walk along the main drag there between where the tenders drop you off and Hard Rock (which you can see from the ship) . We brought some of thier "Captain Rackham's" Rum cake home with us because it was just so darn good. Better than Tortuga, more moist (moister?) If you can't make it to Grand Cayman and want some they will send it to you. Its not cheap so dont give it out to just anybody. |

Normally we're not big shore excursion nuts and frequently go for a nice beach, something we lacked in Kansas where we used to live before moving to paradise...Orlando! On one visit here we tried 7-mile beach and were kind of disappointed. At that time there were so many people there that it was not the serene and relaxing beach experience it might have been. Time for a change.
So another time we tried the Nautilus Submarine underwater adventure. Whitney had just finished a class in Zooolgy in school so it seemed like it would be a winner. It was. We purchased the tickets, again, from our cabin on Funvision which were delivered to us the night before. I must say that Carnival has done a great job planning and executing these shore excursions. The other lines do this one too. In fact, I think there is a fleet of these subs as one seems to turn up in just about every port in the Caribbean. I wonder if they are called into service as spy subs in case of war.

I really don't like the whole business of tendering, for years I wished they'd build a bigger dock, and Tendering in Grand Cayman was kind of a thrill ride of its own; the ride has been really rough every time we've been there.
Finally, they built a new dock!
Getting off the ship brings more photo ops from the ships photographers and there is an opportunity to buy some stuff on the way. Underwater cameras, tote bags for things you might buy ashore and bottled water. If you didn't bring some water with you (like the smart people) you should get some. Otherwise you'll be forced to go to the Hard Rock and buy one of thier cool beer glasses, insisiting it be filled over and over again. (The author has first hand knowledge of this phenomenon)
You'll find your shore group right there gathering with all the other ones. Ours led us to the Atlantis sub, a short walk away. After the sub we did some shopping, ate free Rum Cake (see left), bought illegal Cubans for the boys back home (like they'll appreciate them) and had lunch at the Hard Rock. No beach this time but a great experience. |
