There are only two main roads -- Centerline which traverses the middle of the island, and the road that runs along the coast line (for a short way to the south and most of the way around the north side of the island).
One thing you can do is hire a cab driver to spend the day with you. Go to Trunk Bay first before the crowds get there. Then move on and visit the rest of the north shore beaches and then Cinnamon and Maho which are after Trunk.
Cinnamon has facilities . Hawksnest has been building restroom facilities and Maho has no facilities but is really pretty.
You could drive up to the top of Bordeaux Mountain for a stop at the outdoor grille at Chateau Bordeaux overlooking a breathtaking view of the British Virgin Islands.

We've yet to have St John on an itinerary for any cruise we've been on. But yet we've been there twice when cruising. How can this be?
We chose to take a ferry from St Thomas to St John for a day at Trunk Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches we've ever seen.
Here's how it's done:
-
Take cab from pier to "red hook" ferry place ($8 pp)
-
Take ferry to St John (runs on the hour) ($3pp)
-
Take cab to Trunk Bay (Get "Puff Daddy" for your driver) ($4 pp)
-
Pay entrance to this lovely US Park ($5pp)
-
Have lunch here- awesome cheeseburgers
-
Left at 2:00 to get back, shop then make the 3:00 ferry ("Puff Daddy waited for us ($4pp)
-
Ferry back to redhook again ($3pp)
-
Cab back to pier ($8pp)
So it's about $35 pp total to get there and back+ food or chair rental if you want it
Well worth the price- beautiful beach
